HVAC sizing: why “same size as the old unit” is not a design method

Direct answer: replacement equipment should be selected around the home's heating and cooling loads and the proposed system, not simply by copying the old nameplate or using floor area alone. Manual J is a commonly referenced residential load-calculation methodology used to estimate those loads.
